Size Matters

Ed's wardrobe is divided into sizes, as to what should fit him now (at 3 weeks) up to 3 months, at 3-6 months,  6-9 months, and even some 9-12 months stuff we got at various sales. There is also a newborn category, but everything we have with this label is already tighter than we like on him, even with a disposable diaper. When we try a cloth diaper it's even tighter.

Unfortunately various manufacturers seem to have different opinions as to how big a baby will be at various ages. Gerber's clothing is distinctly smaller than Carter's, and Bambini seem to have measured their stuff for an ape. Some manufacturers have no recommendations at all on the labels; presumably you take the baby into a changing room to try on their range. Some manufacturers do include a weight range suggestion for their clothes, but not consistently.

It would seem more sensible to size baby clothes by weight and length rather than age. A newborn can pop out healthily at any weight between six and ten pounds and be well within the bell curve of normalcy, yet they are supposed to wear the same clothes. At 21" at birth Ed was in the 90th percentile, but by 1 month the 50th percentile babies will have reached 21.5", so he's not exactly lanky.

The upshot of all this is that it's taken a few weeks to try everything on and see what works and what doesn't. Beth has arranged Ed's clothes on baby hangers divided into what we think will fit, and what we know is too large yet. Newborn stuff has been set aside as already too restrictive. As he grows his wardrobe will gradually lose some items and gain others, hopefully commensurate with his needs and the changing seasons.
