Day 14 Midwife visit and weighing

More weight gain by Edward, now 8lbs 9oz. His next official weighing is in two weeks, and I'm predicting 9lbs 12oz, Beth 9lbs 8oz, and Colleen 9lbs 7oz.

Ed had developed a slightly sore-looking bottom and we were worried it might be daiper rash, so we aired him out with some sans-nappy time on a towel in the family room, on top of a a towel on top of a tarpaulin in case of accidents. Colleen told us that this symptom, added to some other messages, told her he wasn't getting quite enough hindmilk. Hindmilk is a thicker fattier milk that only comes as a breast is being drained, so in short feedings it doesn't reach baby in quantity. Fortunately his intake of hindmink is directly connected to his output of poop, and hindmilk gives yellow poop, the lack of it turning the poop green. Ed had been taking longer turns at feeding so Beth had returned to alternating feeds, but this wasn't quite getting all the hindmilk, so now we're back to double dipping, i..e two consecutive feedings at the same breast to drain it. That should up his intake of hindmilk nicely, though he is obviously getting some because of his excellent weight gain.

After Colleen's visit we went to WalMart for some essential, and some less-essential supplies. We treated ourselves to a luggage scale (you hold a handle and dangle the luggage from it) so we can weigh Edward ourselves, and Beth is going to make a special sling to use with it. In all Beth spent around $70 on herself, I spent $100 on me, and we spent around $70 on joint, mostly Ed-related items.

I hadn't had a rest during the day, and had been up since before 5am with Edward, so by 8pm I was zonked, and we had an early bedtime.
