Ed has been such a trooper these past couple of weeks. For ten days we have had a friend from London visiting, which was great fun, but was also another disruption to Ed's routine. Aside from the heat Ed had very few complaints about these, despite spending up to three hours in the car on some days this week. If it had all happened in a cooler season I bet he would have taken it all in complete stride. His biggest meltdown came at a pub's beer garden on Friday afternoon. It's not often I would describe him as "inconsolable" but for a while there he was. Eventually he calmed a bit, enough for Martin to hand him to the only person with free hands when it came time to sign the check - the waiter. (See photo stream!)
Today, with our visitor safely on her way to Portland and the next leg of her adventure, we have declared this an Ed Day in which his needs and schedule come before all else. We had planned to take him to the local pool since it's been so hot this week, but as it happened the heat broke and it took most of the day to get to our high of 77 degrees - much nicer than the 86 to 91 degrees that we had seen by early afternoon for most of the last week.
Martin and I are very low on sleep, mostly due to Ed's new ability to roll over on his front and then complain about it. He insists on doing this throughout the night, giving me plenty of practice in waking up and righting him. Also last night Ghost decided we didn't have enough shrews in the bedroom. Martin is becoming an expert at the 60-second early morning triathlon of wake-discover-catch that is required when this happens. For my part I provided a box to put the trophy in so it wouldn't bite Martin on the trip back outdoors.
So mid-morning today Martin took a couple of hours of solo Ed-duty while I got an extra nap, and now mid-afternoon we have swapped and Martin is catching up. Eddie and I played Magic Carpet (dragging him along the floor on a towel) and Irish Music Time (on my low whistle so as not to wake Martin) and he watched me tidy up his room, and now he is also asleep.
I think the cats are all asleep too. It's now feeling warm enough that a trip to the pool might be nice, but the free children's wading pool is only open from 1:30 to 4:30 and it's 4:18 now. Next weekend, hopefully, we will make it there!
