Cribbage

In the last week we've been working to get Edward into a better wake/sleep routine, and to get get him used to sleeping in his own room during the day, in his bigger crib. At night he's still in the co-sleeper on Beth's side of our bed.

To get him settled we're using a few different tricks. One is swaddling (if he's particularly fussy) so he doesn't wave his arms around and disturb himself. A second is using white noise, provided by static from a distuned radio. These two things simulate some of the feelings of being in the womb, and are usable only until he's about 3 months old (and we're half-way there already). The third ingredient is a blue seahorse that plays a set of tunes, with an accompanying light in its belly, before switching off after about ten minutes. The tunes always play in the same order, and babies like repetition. It may take several runs through the tunes before he's asleep, but he's getting the idea.

We monitor him two ways, with a Graco audio monitor (with vibration function) so we can hear if he cries, and with a webcam so we can watch him.

He needs a nap every 1 to 1 1/2 hours, the naps last an hour or two each, and he's a much happier chap after a nap. Aren't we all?
