A weekend of mixed sun and showers resulted in varying activities for Edward.
On Saturday morning we'd planned to go to a local Scottish Festival, but was it was all outdoors and it was raining heavily, we diverted to Lane Community College that was having a petting zoo day, with various other activities. Most of the activities were aimed at older children, but Edward enjoyed (I think) seeing and touching several animals, including snakes, rabbits and tortoises. He has no innate fear of anything, even a big hairy spider. After he'd had his fill of the animals he decided to go for a wander, and Beth and I pursued and corralled him for about 1/4 mile up ramps and along walkways. He's getting very confident in his walking now, and very quick.
In the afternoon, after a nap, Rachel and Tom brought their son Soren over for a playdate. We had invited several other friends but everyone else was busy, but we didn't mind as we got to chat a lot with Tom and Rachel, while Soren and Edward played. These two seem to get on particularly well together, and even unintential juxtapositioning on the stairs caused no upsets.
Then towards the end of the visit Edward tripped and smacked his right eyebrow on the corner of a coffee table. For a moment we had visions of hospital visits, but after some cuddles he soon stopped crying and we saw the damage was not too bad, just a bruise. After Rachel and co. left Edward managed to fall off the back of the couch, his second surprise fall within an hour. Happily again no lasting damage, but after more cuddles it was time for bed.
On Sunday it was damp again in the morning so we took Edward to the Valley River Mall play area. Two Mexican girls took a particular shine to him and watched out for him, while Beth and I let him explore and play. He is fond of steering wheels, maybe because on visits to Fred Meyer we try to get him in a 'car' cart that has steering wheels, and in which he faces forwards. If he is in a normal cart he always sits half-sideways to look ahead, and sometimes gets his feet and legs tangled.
It brightened up later so we went to Arrowhead Park, another local playpark within walking distance with all the usual trappings, though we took the van for convenience. There were a number of older girls around 8-12 years old climbing the trees, which form a ring around the play structures and give some much appreciated shade in the Summer. Ed had a go on the see-saw with a couple of them.
Ed launched himself down the two slides on the main structure, one straight and one corkscrew, backwards.
He's getting more and more confident in his physical prowess, and often takes off for a wander towards the horizon. We've invested in a set of baby reins, thoguh I always hated seeing children wearing them I can see why they might be useful for safety.
