Water Lot of Fun

It's been too long since we took Edward to a swimming pool, due to illnesses and weather, but on Friday evening we managed an outing to Willamalane Pool, and he had a blast. They have extended family swim time to include Friday evenings, so for $2.50 a head we had over a hour and a half in the pool, and could have had longer. We hope to make this a weekly activity for a while. A while ago we got a lifejacket for Edward, which works pretty well and goes up to 50lbs weight. He managed to splash about by himself a but, though not making much progress through the water. Certainly he isn't afraid of the water, and that's something we wish to continue.

This is a modern pool where the water goes right up to the edge and spills over into a channel under a grating, so Edward was able to climb out by himself, walk round, and climb down the stairs back in again, with dad there just to offer a helping hand.

For water play in the house, Edward's favorite self-directed activity is playing in the downstairs bathroom sink. Often when we're sitting downstairs we hear the tap start to run, and splashing occurring. Sometimes Ed practises washing his hands with liquid soap, but mostly he fills a cup and then pours it into another cup, back and forth, back and forth. His daycare teachers have remarked on his ability to focus on a task much longer than his playmates, frequently sticking with an activity, painting, drawing, glueing etc., for twenty minutes after everyone else got bored and moved onto another activity. He'll splash in the sink for half an hour at a time, until we have to change his wet clothes and mop the floor dry.
