Happy Birthday Edward!

Edward is one year old! He was unusually solemn for most of the day. Perhaps he is feeling his years.

He started the day with a quick nosh on an unattended piece of birthday cake, left over from last night's baking and taste test. He made short work of it:

After breakfast we attempted to interest him in his birthday presents. Ed enjoyed his new Leapfrog activity table, courtesy of his Uncle Chris and Aunt Maureen in Texas. He played with a similar one while visiting them at Christmas. His aunt and uncle also got him a wooden puzzle, which we are saving for a few more months until he won't slobber it so much, and a warm set of outerwear, which he opened early and has been using in the brisk weather already.

The table did not need unwrapping - it was ready to go. He was surprisingly reluctant to unwrap anything, which we had not expected given his interest in eating any other piece of paper his little mitts land on. We coaxed him through one present, which turned out to be a "Fish and Splish" bath toy set from his Great-Uncle Fred - his maternal grandfather's eldest brother. As Ed loves the bathtub, this was a perfect addition to his marine arsenal.

Next - cake time! In addition to photographs we took a time lapse video of him eating his banana and applesauce cake with cream cheese frosting. I think he would have eaten the whole thing if we'd let him.

After cake, by necessity, was bath time. Here Great-Uncle Fred's gift was put to the test and passed with flying colors. The set included three plastic cups for water play:

And then to bed, for nap time. After nap, Ed decided to play in a tiny makeshift ball pit:

We also continued to coax him to open presents, to no avail. After lunch and a second nap we headed off to the party of his birthday buddy James. Ed took his little red push-car along, which was a hit among the under-two set, and also got to show off his new shoes purchased yesterday in Corvallis. But he may well be an introvert...after a while he decided to take his car and strike off for new horizons alone!

Eventually I enticed him back to the party.

Once we were home again, Martin and I gave up with the Ed-unwrapping and did it ourselves. Grandma and Grandpa in England sent an assortment of children's books, a kids' utensil set, a decoration for his room and a plush cat doll.

All this activity was very tiring for our big little guy! He had a quick dinner-on-the-go while walking around and around his activity table.

Then we, collectively, decided it was bedtime. Out like a light around 6:30. Sleep well, Mister One-Year-Old!

(Please... sleep well.... please?)
