Ice Storm

In early December we experienced an ice storm. This is a peculiar and fortunately rare weather event where rain comes down at near freezing temperature and coats everything it touches with ice. This is particularly hard on certain trees, as their limbs suddenly gain hundreds of pounds of extra weight in a matter of hours. Many trees in Eugene lost branches, or were split asunder as the ice tore them quite literally limb from limb.

Our neighborhood was one of the harder hit in Eugene, though we retained power at home throughout. In other areas power lines came down, and a colleague of Beth's lost power in their house for several days - no joke when it's consistently below freezing at night, and not much above during the day.

Many trees we saw every day are now gone completely, just stumps showing where they used to be.
